Technology @ HCA
Over the next two years, HCA plans to introduce a 1-to-1 technology initiative to empower teachers and students to integrate technology into the learning process in a way that emphasizes the priorities of the 21st Century education model - Creativity, Critical Thinking, Collaboration, and Communication.
Technology is the creative activity of using tools to transform God’s creation
for practical purposes. Tim Challis
for practical purposes. Tim Challis

There are two primary motivations behind this initiative - Philosophical (The development and use of 21st Century skills is consistent with our role as “image bearers of God” as we demonstrate creativity, critical thinking, collaborations, and communication.) and Pedagogical (The 21st Century workplace demands that we train our students to be excellent in these skills as we develop their expertise in the content areas.).
Each of the “4 C’s” can be found in our call to be an expression of the image of God. Paul’s admonition to be “renewed in our minds” (Rom 12:1) speaks of critical thinking; the call to “subdue the earth” involves creatively using the resources God provides to benefit man (sand becomes a silicon chip which become an iPhone!); the “one anothers” and Paul’s illustration of giftedness in the body in I Corinthians 12 points to collaboration. Even in the creation of man we see collaboration within the Trinity … and let us make man in our own image; and the very existence of God’s Word, both the written Word and the Living Word, is God’s communication of eternal truth with His creation.

GRADES K-6
Students in kindergarten through third grade meet weekly for computer class in the Media Center. This class acquaints students with the computer so they can learn beginning computer skills. Students use various programs to reinforce classroom skills with projects coordinated with classroom teachers to coincide with current academic study. Computer usage is integrated into classroom work in fourth through sixth grades. An iPad cart is available to all classrooms to further integrate 21st Century skills in the classroom
GRADES 7-12
Beginning in January 2014, HCA will go to a 1-1 BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) models for students in grades 9-11. Each student will be required to bring their own iPad to school each day. HCA has employed a robust mobile device management and anytime/anywhere content filtering solution from Lightspeed Systems to support this effort. The BYOD approach will allow teachers to employ 21st Century skills (the "4 C's") in a much more effective manner, using the learning management system My Big Campus to facilitate communication and collaboration.
Students in grades 7-8 will have an iPad cart available to their classroom to be used on campus to enhance their educational experience.
A complete summary of the HCA Technology initiative for 2013-14 is available below.
